![]() At the end of Stray the sunlight appeared to eliminate the bulk of the Zurk. Stray does not specify what happened to humans, but assuming a dog came to regard B-12 or the rest of the game’s sentient robots as human, the relationship would play out very differently.Ī sequel could bring back all of Stray’s cutest robot allies and introduce them to a new dog friend. Dogs and cats alike tend to distrust moving machines that lack a smell identifying them as a living creature, so it stretches believability that either animal would react to humanoid robots as if they were any less terrifying than a Roomba automated vacuum. Dogs are classically described as “man’s best friend,” and in a world where humans have died out, the sight of a pack of stray dogs might serve as a sad reminder of what has been lost. There may be thematic reasons why a cat was chosen for Stray, beyond the mechanics such a character offers, or the preference of the developers. A dog character could add variety with some Batman: Arkham-style investigations that highlight their sense of smell, and a larger dog might be able to engage in some direct combat instead of relying solely on evasion. Stray only takes a few hours to complete its story, and the limits of its methods for puzzle-solving are laid out early in the game. The puzzles in Stray where the cat transports objects held in its mouth would be even more appropriate for a dog, as fetching is a common trait across many dog breeds. They are not associated with batting at objects, or sharpening their claws in the same way, and dogs that do exhibit these behaviors are often described as having cat-like mannerisms. Dogs are not, generally speaking, as known for the jumping and agility, to the same degree as cats. Given the weight of Stray’s reliance on its cat character for its appeal, a similar game for dog lovers would be a welcome prospect.Ī dog-oriented take on Stray would involve some changes to the gameplay. Some players may have preferred a simple cat simulator over a cyberpunk setting adventure with chase scenes and stealth sequences. This gave the game added novelty that has evidently resonated with players, as there has been more focus on the cute cat things players can do in Stray than on its gameplay or story. The so-called “mascot platformers” ranged from the memorable and lasting animal character franchises, like Sonic the Hedgehog and Crash Bandicoot, to more forgettable characters like Gex or Bubsy. These games featured protagonists that were closer to real-life animals than the glut of anthropomorphic animal characters that were the norm in prior generations. Titles like Stray and Untitled Goose Game were indie success stories, in large part due to them putting players in control of cute, but aggravating, animal characters. ![]()
